...ibon mang may layang lumipad...

On a really confusing day in my unfathomable reality, I tried to observe the different phenomenon and events in this world. Things such as my homeland’s squalid state and the people who settled with mediocrity. I hope I learned something from my observations…

My homeland’s history according to me…

Philippines, a country that used to have its own religion, leaders, beliefs and identity. Then the Spaniards came and colonized our country. We were treated like animals, we were degraded in our own country, as if we were slaves of our visitors. Then because of the Treaty of Paris, we were bought by the Americans from the Spaniards… we were like manufactured goods. Emilio Aguinaldo thought we were independent… and so did our ancestors but if they can predict the future, maybe they would know we're not. Then because of Hitler’s undeniable talent in oration, he convinced the Germans and other countries like Japan to colonize. The world was divided. Japan, a country who used to be power hungry, went to the Philippines disguised as our friends but it was only a scheme that they used. They brutally murdered our countrymen as if they were slaughtering animals. We fought. We won. Or so we thought.

People who thought that our country was worth dying for wasted their precious lives for our country’s sake. These people are those who acquired great sense of nationalism and patriotism. Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, and Melchora Aquino are only few names of the people who truly cared for our country. Let us thank them… we wouldn’t be what we are right now without them.

Then the late dictator, Ferdinand Edralin Marcos made history. Like Hitler a very strategic and intelligent human being. Another prominent orator. The regime of Ferdinand Marcos was somewhat beneficial and detrimental to our country. He declared Martial Law on the 21st of September 1972. This act and the rest that goes with it prompted the EDSA Revolution in 1986, the REAL and ONLY People Power. Marcos was ousted. Cory won the mock election. Then Ramos won for presidency after Cory’s term. Then Joseph the 13th president had gone through an unfinished impeachment trial and GMA, the vice-president, took over as acting president. Erap never resigned, just for the record. After 3 years she vied for presidency as an incumbent president and went head to head with Fernando Poe Jr. Then in June 2005 a wiretapped conversation between GMA and a COMELEC official, allegedly Virgilio Garcillano, was exposed to the public by Ignacio Bunye, the president’s press secretary.

The “president” had been taking part in a lot of controversies… the wiretapped conversation, the jueteng scandal wherein her husband and eldest son were suspected of committing. A lot of Senate and Congress trials and debates went on and on 24/7 and it came to a point when they didn’t even sleep just to vote YES or NO.

It’s sad really when we see our country divided. Ms. President is calling for national unity which I think would be highly improbable if she would remain in her office. The dollar rates are improving, yes that’s true… but more than half of the Filipino people are unemployed and can’t even eat 3 meals in a day. Where’s the improvement there? Doesn’t the president notice the condition of the people she is supposed to be serving and she calls herself an economist? Isn’t she feeling guilty that more than half of the people she’s serving are living on the streets with no food to eat and she is living in a palace with caviars and expensive champagnes being served to her in one of her meals? She is obliged to serve us… she’s the president… and we are not obliged to serve her.

And now… she would be extending her term… yes… for a parliamentary form of government. I agree with the parliamentary form of government in our country... but with the same people in the seats in the parliament, I’d rather have a military takeover. Speaking of the military… they should serve us not the president.

Most of the things happening in our country aren’t good. We have erroneously set our priorities. We are still slaves up to now… not by foreigners but by ourselves. If our heroes were alive right now… they would have cursed us with all their might. Isn’t it sad that what they fought for became somewhat useless because of our power hungry attitude? I wonder why we Filipinos love seeing and watching other Filipinos fall… Why not help them stand up rather than watch them fall and laugh at them. What happened to the hospitable Filipino?

We need to change… and that change should take place right now. I know we can do it… we have lots of guts and talents within us. We shouldn’t be scared to show the world who we are. We still don't know what our future would be like but there's one thing I know... it depends on us, Filipinos.
